Dr. Monica Burns is a Curriculum and EdTech Consultant, Apple Distinguished Educator and Founder of ClassTechTips.com. Monica was part of her school’s leadership team and was a vocal advocate for bringing one-to-one technology into her classroom. As a classroom teacher, Monica used iPads to create an engaging, differentiated learning experience to meet the unique needs of her students. Realizing the power of digital tools in the classroom, Monica started ClassTechTips.com to provide a resource for educators.

Since starting ClassTechTips.com, Monica has presented to teachers, administrators and tech-enthusiasts at numerous national and international conferences including SXSWedu, ISTE, FETC and EduTECH. She is a webinar host for SimpleK12 and a regular contributor to Edutopia. Monica is the author of Tasks Before Apps: Designing Rigorous Learning in a Tech-Rich Classroom (ASCD), #FormativeTech: Meaningful, Sustainable, and Scannable Formative Assessment with Technology (Corwin), Deeper Learning with QR Codes and Augmented Reality(Corwin), and co-author of Taming the Wild Text: Literacy Strategies for Today’s Reader (Shell).

Monica visits schools across the country to work with PreK-20 teachers to make technology integration exciting and accessible. In addition to being named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2013, Monica is a graduate of the University of Delaware and Hunter College, and completed a Doctorate in Global Education Leadership at Lamar University in 2016.

Monica’s mission is to help educators place the tasks before apps and promote deeper learning with technology.

    What does formative assessment look like in in today’s schools? It’s not about taking a test, it’s about gathering information in real-time to make sure the needs of all students are being met. This session provides actionable information to make formative assessment meaningful (so it counts), sustainable (so it lasts), and scalable (so everyone in your school does it too). This interactive session isn’t about the tools, but how you use them to gather data that tells a story of student learning. You’ll walk away practical tips to check for understanding with technology during whole class, small group, and individual lessons including ideas for assessing project-based and inquiry-based approaches and ways to evaluate data and communicate results with families.

  • Ignite a Spark! From Consumption to Creation in a Flash

    Students of all ages have a story to tell! From personal narratives in the English Language Arts classrooms to sharing the steps of an experiment in a Science classroom. In this session you’ll learn how designing opportunities for creation in the classroom empower students as learners and consumers. After an overview of the totally free Adobe Spark tools for iPads and Chromebooks, attendees will have an opportunity to make and share as they participate in a model workflow for students. This session will introduce Spark Video movie-making tool, Spark Page website builder tool, and Spark Post image creator tool. Attendees will hear see student work samples and find inspiration for learning activities across the content areas.

    In this fast-paced session, you will learn about 15 favorite technology tools for digital readers. These tools are perfect for K-12 teachers and totally customizable for your learning goals. The goal of this session is to help educators understand the power of technology in the hands of digital readers through the presentation of a series of tools in the context of classroom learning experiences.
