As the Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Cultural Competency at Kingswood Oxford School (West Hartford, CT), Joan Edwards has honed her skills in intergroup facilitation. While there are many challenges to supporting people as they learn to relate across differences, the biggest challenge is to learn how to master oneself in order to be effective. Joan believes that it is a courageous act to reflect and engage in self-work especially in a world and time when “helping others” is expected and often highly rewarded. However, as they say on the airlines, it is critical to put on one’s oxygen mask before attempting to help others. Joan is, therefore,  committed to supporting everyone to develop their own “self-care” regimen in order to joyfully and effectively manage the multiple roles and tasks that we all have.
