Description

On Monday, June 17, 2024, in partnership with CAIS, Hopkins School is hosting a one-day conference at which you’ll have direct access to experts and educators in the field of AI, as well as hands-on practice learning and implementing the technology in your classroom or at your school. Following a keynote talk by independent school educator and facilitator Eric Hudson: The Power And Potential Of Generative AI In Schools, all conference attendees will participate in three concurrent workshop sessions: 1) a hands-on workshop with Eric entitled Empowering Educators: A Hands-On Exploration of Generative AI in the Classroom; 2) a facilitated conversation with students to hear their lived experience with the new technology; and 3) an unconference-like session where participants can share questions and experiences from their own classrooms and apply what they’ve learned from the day. We’ll close the day with a keynote by Jenny Frederick, Associate Provost for Academic Initiatives at Yale: From Classroom to Campus: Meeting the Challenges of an Evolving Educational Landscape.
**This conference will include hands-on, interactive learning workshops. Participants should plan to bring a tablet or laptop to use during the workshops.**
GENERAL SESSION WITH ERIC HUDSON: The Power And Potential Of Generative AI In Schools

How might we focus on what generative AI enables in our schools rather than what it prevents? The rapid rise of artificial intelligence has introduced a powerful new tool in education and beyond, but it has also reinvigorated a longstanding conversation about what the role of technology should be in learning. This session will introduce a framework for using generative AI to deepen learning and foster innovation and collaboration among students and educators. We’ll review the current state of generative AI in education. We’ll consider the core competencies of effective use of AI and imagine practical applications for both students and educators to integrate generative AI into their learning and work.

HANDS ON WORKSHOP: AI For Educators: Efficiency, Effectiveness, And Innovation

The true potential of AI in education lies not in who or what it will replace, but how it can assist humans to think and work in new ways. This session offers practical AI ideas and applications for the work of classroom teachers and school administrators. We’ll review the current landscape of AI in education, then practice using AI in three key areas:

  • Efficiency: How can I use AI to work more quickly and to introduce more automation
  • into my workflow?
  • Effectiveness: How can I use AI to ensure my work is of the highest quality?
  • Innovation: How can I use AI to help me generate and apply new ideas?

This is a hands-on session where we’ll work with a few different AI tools. Participants will be provided with guided activities and prompts. Through considering and applying AI in the context of our individual work, we’ll build our own AI literacy and reflect on AI’s impact on the work of our school communities.

A CONVERSATION WITH STUDENTS: What’s the Real Deal?

Participants will engage in facilitated small group conversations with students to hear their perspective on the impact of AI in the classroom and beyond.

UNCONFERENCE:
Spend time with fellow educators discussing the application of AI technology in your classroom, and actively applying what you’ve learned throughout the conference.
KEYNOTE BY JENNY FREDERICK: From Classroom to Campus: Meeting the Challenges of an Evolving Educational Landscape

In this closing keynote, we explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the educational transition from K-12 to college. We’ll discuss academic skills that remain essential in an increasingly AI-infused world and durable pedagogies amidst rapid technological advancements. The session will highlight the current evolution of higher education and implications for incoming college students. Together, we’ll uncover how challenges and opportunities in AI can unify and benefit both K-12 and college educators. Attendees will gain a framework for updating their teaching methods and curricula, preparing students effectively for future challenges. This talk is designed to equip educators and administrators with insights to inform development of innovative, AI-enhanced learning models as we redefine educational excellence in the age of AI.
